What is a Postpartum Doula?

The word “doula” is derived from a Greek word which means “servant.” In modern usage the word has come to mean “one who serves the new mother.” A Doula is a caring, skilled, knowledgeable individual who cares for moms and families after the birth of a baby.

A Doula’s basic role is to provide nonintrusive, nonjudgemental support according to the family’s needs and wishes. - Mothering the New Mother, 1994

Your visits always seemed to cure that feeling of impending chaos and gave us both a sense of security.

Renee was a God-send. She took care of me and allowed me to rest and get strong so I could begin mothering.

Overnight Doula Care

Whether you are breastfeeding, using pumped milk for bottle feedings or using formula, you may need additional help at night. An overnight doula will care for your baby while you sleep and help with baby-calming techniques. The overnight option provides you much-needed rest and gives your partner a break as well. This type of specialized help can take many forms. You may want to sleep all night, breastfeed every time the baby wakes, or something in between. It’s up to you!
